What is MMIP?

The Missing and Murdered Indigenous People (MMIP) crisis refers to the disproportionately high rates of violence experienced by American Indian and Alaska Native people, particularly women and girls.

Research shows Indigenous communities experience some of the highest rates of violence in the United States.

More than 4 in 5 American Indian and Alaska Native women (84.3%) experience violence in their lifetime.

Domestic violence, sexual violence, trafficking, and stalking are often connected to cases involving missing or murdered Indigenous people.

Raising awareness and supporting survivors are important steps in helping prevent violence and protect Indigenous communities.
